Village Smile

Yunwen is a 12-year-girl who is living in the Xijiang Village in Guizhou. Being the oldest children in the poor family, the little girl now is working in the family-fund workshop and helping her parents to support the whole family. Although facing a very difficult situation, she never gives up her enthusiasm on studying and always hopes one day will be able to go back to school.

Guizhou is famous for its Batik Art in China as well as over the world, the colorful costumes of the ethnic groups demonstrate not only exquisite embroidery but also batik in terms of workmanship and patterns, with excellent wax-printing skills.Wax-printing is traditional folk art here and has a history of over 2000 years in China. The local Buyi and Miao women have excellent wax-printing skills adn begin studying the art as children. they draw simple but elegant picture on cloth with wax knives.

Paper-makingAbout 1,800 years ago, during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), Cai Lun improved China's papermaking technique using bark and hemp. This then became one of the four great ancient inventions of China. Today, ancient papermaking has been replaced by modern means of production, but in some places in southwestern China's Guizhou Province, where many people of ethnic-minority groups live, this ancient technique is still practiced.
